Take-Home Messages

Gastroparesis, a condition in which the stomach does not empty normally, is treated with small meals, control of diabetes, a low-fiber diet, and medications.

Metoclopramide is helpful for many patients with gastroparesis but must be stopped immediately if tremors or abnormal body movements are observed.

Celiac disease comes to medical attention because of diarrhea, weight loss, abdominal pain, and/or gas. It should be considered in patients with unexplained iron deficiency anemia.

Untreated celiac disease can lead to cancer of the small intestine. Lifelong adherence to the gluten-free diet is strongly recommended.

Cross contamination, the inadvertent mixing of gluten-containing and gluten-free food, is a major barrier to celiac patients’ ability to eat in restaurants or other people’s homes. With careful planning, gluten-free dining in these settings is possible.
